day in dc

I'm home in Virginia for spring break, which is a much needed week of relaxing and no classes after several tough, stressful weeks of school. This break has been mostly spent by watching TV and movies, reading for class, baking, and updating my portfolio, but my mom and I decided to go into DC on Sunday.

Thankfully spring is finally on its way and it was a beautiful and breezy 55 degrees in the district - I've never been as excited for this weather as I have been this year.

From the metro we headed across the mall to the National Gallery of Art, one of my favorite museums in the city. I only took pictures when we crossed over to the east building - I've been obsessed with the walkway that connects the east and west buildings of the museum, where there is a cool light installation wrapping around the side and the ceiling.

I loved the azaleas all around the fountain in the rotunda

After leaving the museum, we walked around for a while, taking the touristy walk west along the Mall. Unfortunately there's a lot of construction on the Mall and down at the Capitol at the moment, so the sight isn't so pretty. At least the scaffolding is finally off the Washington Monument, though the reflecting pool was disappointingly drained.

The wind was strongest at the Washington Monument, where it's a much more open space. There were a bunch of families out around the monument to fly kites.

We went through the WWII memorial, which I think looks much better at night with everything lit up, and past the Vietnam memorial. We kept going on until we made it to the Lincoln. It's one of my favorite tourist spots - when the reflecting pool isn't drained, that is, because the Washington Monument reflects down the length of the pool, the Mall stretches out beyond it, the Jefferson is in sight, and the trees line the pool.

I wish I wasn't going to miss cherry blossom season and skip right to the humid hell of summer in the district, but see you in May, DC.
